Since the opening of the Coquihalla highways, 1986 - 2008
It increased the number of Traffic, even with Highway from Hope to Merritt, was toll operated.
The first few years motorcycles were free!..so of course groups of them would travel through during the summer season. Then the motorcycle's had to pay $5.00 to pass through.
Many motorist had to pay 10.00; 20.00; or 50.00 dollars to complete their journey on Coquihalla highway.
From BC Ministry of Transportation stats,
the Route 5A/97C , on July 15, 2008 4,348 travellers drove on that highway. The peak volume of travellers was at 1:00pm of 320 vehicles.
Assuming its that amount daily volume multiplying by 365 days a year. That is 1,587,020. 00 travellers a year! wow, unreal.
I found the increase of traffic through our native territory has limited our natural resources of hunting, fishing, and wild berry harvesting. Too many people have access to our territory. I live down stream from the highway, over time results have effected our land and water. Mainly from traffic pollution and garbage.
That's 22 years of Toll Booth operations, which accumulated thousands of dollars!..
